C1 Corel Practice Painting

Here is a short tutorial for painting an apple in Corel Painter 12. If you have little to no drawing or painting experience that is okay. If you are more advanced with drawing and painting you will be able to really flex your strength in the following project. Watch the tutorial- the apple image is included below the video.

The tutorial is two parts, the first part is somewhat long, but really shows a lot of little techniques. The second part is really short and just shows the finished product:

B6 Design Dream Job

Sometimes as a graphic artist you may need to create images that are simply to pay your bills; still a really fun job! For this project imagine that you are a super hot shot graphic designer and you have just landed a contract to create a skateboard deck design for an awesome skate company, OR a concert gig poster for your favorite musical artist/band. Projects must be created in illustrator, though you can use reference images from the internet. Do not copy an existing design for a deck or poster. You must combine multiple images to create your project: don't just trace one image. Remember compositional rules! Both projects should include use of the gradient tool. Here is a new tutorial on how to use the gradient tool:

Requirements for both:
Trace or draw with the pen tool at least 3 different images into your project that are fairly complicated.
Include a clear focal point - follow rules of composition.

Here is a link to the composition PowerPoint: Click Here

Here is a link to a "Design IQ" test: Click Here

Gig posters should be 11" x 17"
Gig posters should include informational text:

  • Name of Band
  • Date/Time of Event
  • Venue
  • Cost

The template for the skateboard is on the network drive.
Here are some cool examples of skateboard deck designs and gig posters:

B5 Copycat?

Read this article:
Neolucida an old school drawing tool for the 21st century.

Answer the following in a short essay format:
What is the value of tracing images? When is it okay to copy something? When can it get you in trouble? Relate this to your work in this class.

B4 T-Shirt Bleach Stencil

We are going to create a stencil design for a t-shirt that is a logo or small graphic that advertises a great quality about ourselves. These will be done on a black or dark colored T-Shirt. We will all get our stencils completed and then get a little messy in another classroom as a group. Here is a cool example of one:

Here is a tutorial on the process:

B3 Logo Spoof

Here is a link to the lesson PowerPoint: Click Here

For this project you will be required to research a corporation that may have caused some problems in society. Look at their corporate logo and think about ways that you could alter it to be a form of critique regarding the social issue they are connected with. Then create Photoshopped alteration of the logo. Next you need to bring your Photoshopped image into Illustrator and trace it with the pen tool. Be sure to include bridges and islands so the stencil works when you cut it out. Finally you will cut it out and spray paint through the stencil. Here is an example of the stencil created in illustrator:

B2 Pen Tool Practice

D2 Illustrator Project
Find a cool image of a scene off of the internet of a reasonably complex thing: an animal, car, house, person's face, etc... Then use the strategies learned in the Illustrator Practice lesson D1 to complete the drawing over the top of your found image. This project should include much more detail and layers of color/value than the violin.

A9 Photomontage

This tutorial will show you how to shoot and compile a photomontage. Watch the tutorial until the 2:30 mark before you take your pictures. Go out and shoot your pictures. Then return to the tutorial and keep watching.

Here is a David Hockney Photomontage:

A8 Truth in Advertising

At this point you should be fairly well equipped to use many basic Photoshop techniques. This is a full blown project where you will now use your techniques to create a satirical piece of artwork. Advertisements are often very misleading. Study the examples below closely to get a good understanding of the project.
Step 1: Find an advertisment image out of a real magazine.
Step 2: Scan the image and copy it onto your desktop.
Step 3: Create a visual analysis and description of how the advertisement uses (often) imagery to convey meaning.
Step 4: Create a Photoshopped spoof of the advertisement; show what the advertisement might be like if it were being truthful. keeping in mind our discussion on intellectual property, appropriation and plagiarism: you must change the image at least 50%. If you would like to use a camera to take pictures that is great.
Make sure to use that refine edge tool with your selections!

Follow this tutorial that shows you how to set up your canvas and add comments:

A7 Light Graffiti

Light graffiti is a fun way to learn about exposure. You will be required to complete the following images:

  • Double exposure
  • Non-objective/expressive
  • Written words
  • Drawing of something recognizable
  • Anything cool you can think of!

Here are several excellent examples of light graffiti:

A6 Spot the Difference

People can use Photoshop in very deceptive ways:

Totalitarian regimes have used photoshop as a way to mislead the public. Here is a photo the North Korean government released spring 2013 that shows several more hovercrafts added to their fleet.

The following image is from Iran:

Read this excerpt from the Washington Post website about what is going on in the Iranian image with the rockets:
By Al Kamen
Friday, July 11, 2008

It's customary for nations to do a bit of chest-thumping as they are about to begin negotiations, which Iran has agreed to consider in a meeting next week with European Union official Javier Solana. The idea is to do something that your opponents will see as a sign of strength before talks begin, especially, in this case, when the talks involve your nuclear program.

This might explain the timing of Iran's latest missile tests Wednesday. It might also explain what appears to be a bit of Photoshop work by Tehran to ensure the images were just so.
A photo on the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps Web site distributed Wednesday by Agence France-Presse showed four missiles launched simultaneously. That photo appeared on various Web sites Wednesday, including those of the New York Times and BBC News, and on the front pages of a number of newspapers, including the Los Angeles Times and the Chicago Tribune.
The Associated Press and Reuters distributed similar photos, but they showed only three missiles. The Washington Post used a Reuters image in yesterday's paper.

Noted debunker Charles Johnsonapparently spotted the photo doctoring Wednesday and posted it on his Web site, LittleGreenFootballs.com.

AFP, citing analysts' assessments, reported yesterday that the four-missile photo appeared to have had a little digital work done. "One of the missiles had apparently been added to the photograph using elements from the smoke trail and dust clouds from two of the other missiles," AFP said. The goal apparently was to cover up "a misfiring of one of the missiles," an expert told AFP.
Well, artistically, the three-missile shot used by The Post was clearly inferior. The symmetry was way off and all that. The gap between the middle missile and the one on the right is simply too large.
Artistic considerations aside, there are arms experts who say that multiple launches are seen as a way to overwhelm missile defense systems, and the Iranians may have wanted to illustrate that capability, as well.

Other Web sites reported that an Islamic Republic News Agency article Wednesday included a photo of what appears to be the same multiple missile launching. It was published in The Post in 2006. (Hey! We had it first!)

Assignment
For this assignment you will be required to change 20 aspects of an image. Some of these may be somewhat obvious to your audience, and some may be more sneaky. Once complete, post the changed version and the original version on your blog. When you select an image, make sure it doesn't have too much detail (a crowd of 1,000,000 people for example) and also make sure it isn't too simple (a seascape with one boat in the distance). The photo I've chosen is a great example. Here is an example I have composed:

See if you can find all 20 changes to the image before you scroll down and find the differences in the original.

Here is a supplemental tool tutorial for selection tools and layers:

A5 Photoretouching

Watch this retouching tutorial for guidance. Retouch the image below along with the video. Post the image in it's original damaged form, and then also post the version you restore. If you would like to bring in an old family photo and restore it for 10 points extra credit that will also be an option.

Click on this image to maximize it's size, then download it.
Hold down control and click on it and then select "Saved linked file as" in the drop down menu.

Here is a restoration gone wrong:

This was poorly restored with paint by hand, and not with Photoshop tools.

A4 Pop Art Self Portrait

Here is a lesson that focuses on creating pop art style imagery with Photoshop:
Requirements: use 3 different photos of yourself to create a pop art self-portrait. Make it an interesting composition that includes movement and contrast.

A3 More Photoshop Basics

For this project you will need to have your picture taken in front of the green screen. Get at least 3 different Photographs of yourself. You will only need one picture for this project, but the next project you will need 3 (might as well get these taken all at once.)

Here is part one of a tutorial that will show you how to access files off of the network as well as some more selection tool practice:

This tutorial will show you how to complete a Faceswap. It is basically a popular form of a meme (internet joke that becomes viral and is remixed ad nauseum).

A1 Blog Creation

A1 Blog Creation

Welcome to Digital Media! Your first assignment is to create a blog that you use as a portfolio to showcase your artwork. If you have an existing blog please create a new one that is just for this class.
